Using RemoteExec in conjunction with
Microsoft Software Update Services is a nice one-two combination to
constantly poll the Windows system update web site for the latest
hotfixes, service packs, and security updates; download them; and then
push them out.
Microsoft SUS is a free, no-charge service provided by Microsoft to
help network administrators download security patches more easily. In
simple terms, Microsoft SUS is a version of Windows Update that you can
run within your local area network. Much like a local cache server,
instead of each workstation having to connect to the Internet to update
Windows, each workstation connects to the local Microsoft SUS Server
instead and updates from there. Microsoft SUS Server alone requires
access to the public Internet as it connects to the Windows Update web
site.
By connecting to the Windows Update web site, Microsoft SUS Server
provides notification of critical updates. After that, RemoteExec is a
good solution for pushing out operating system patches. It supports all
operating system patches, including patches for applications that are
components of the operating system, such as IIS and IE.
